I've tried to watch several Jess Franco films and I've always had a hard time swallowing the crapfests that usually ensued. Yet still, there are so many fans of his work that maybe I've just missed out on his more important work. Faceless is at least the most watchable film I've viewed from him yet. Faceless is about a brilliant plastic surgeon whose sister's face is burned with acid in an attack meant for him. He promises her that he'll fix the damage and make her beautiful once more, but after realizing nothing short of a full face transplant will help her he sets out to do the impossible. He will kidnap women and attempt to transfer a beautiful face in place of her damaged one. Sounds like a superficial face off right?
What we have here is some eurosleaze that is horrific though not really a horror film. Its more of a thriller gone bad I guess. The script is decent and with enough action and tension to at least keep me watching to the end, which is more then i can say about any other Franco film I've seen. The acting, though dubbed, is also bearable and the directing is downright competent.
As I've said, I'm no fan of Franco yet, and this film does little to make me a believer. It is a pretty good film, but not a great one. Check it out if it crosses your path, but I wouldn't bother hunting it down.
Gore - mild/medium
Nudity - some
Overall - 6/10
