Severance is a british Horror/Comedy (note not a Comedy/Horror) about a group of people employed by a corporate arms manufacturer that goes for a nice team building weekend in the back woods of Hungary. Upon reaching the woods the team discovers they are being hunted by an unknown killer in the woods. Sounds like a pretty standard killer in the woods film right?
Wrong. This film does everything it could possibly do right. The script moves at a very brisk pace but not so fast that we don't get a chance to learn about each character. The beginning of the film is filled with funny moments that allow us to begin to care about each indivdual character. Instead of hating the cast the director takes great care to make the audience feel empathetic towards the characters. This sets us up for the wonderful carnage that is to come.
Great acting and great special effects along with a very smart script equal one of the best damn horror films to come out in the past five years. Why this never reached theaters is beyond me. Tons of gore (one stomach turning scene involving a bear trap included), lots of laughs and some plain old badass shoot em up bad guy killing action gives this film the balls to satisfy any horror fan. Fans of Shaun of the dead this is a must.
